Captain America / Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) looking at Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame
Marvel Studios has kicked off the marketing blitz for Avengers: Doomsday in an unusual style. A theater-exclusive trailer announcing Chris Evans' return as Steve Rogers is exclusively playing in theaters before Avatar: Fire and Ash, but only for one week, before a new teaser debuts.
While the Steve Rogers trailer isn't officially online, the Russo brothers played into the nightmarish Doomsday trailer release decision, sharing a brief video with a countdown clock. The clock is also featured at the end of the Steve-focused teaser, starting the countdown at 12 months, which is when Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters. At first glance, the clock ticking down to the film's release appears to be its only purpose. But there is a good chance that Marvel and the Russo brothers are using it for a specific reason. The countdown clock could be an important plot point in Avengers: Doomsday. A Countdown Clock May Play A Factor In Avengers: Doomsday's Story Officially, there is not much known about Doomsday's story, only that Doctor Doom has kidnapped Franklin Richards, a Fantastic Four-themed ship comes to Earth-616, and that Steve will return along with many characters from across the MCU multiverse. It's now quite possible that a countdown clock will play a significant role. The belief is that Avengers: Doomsday will focus on a looming incursion that could wipe out Earth-616, if not the entire universe. The MCU has set up incursions through Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki, and The Marvels, with the multiversal event that destroyed universes pulled straight from the comics. All the heroes in Doomsday will likely become incredibly aware of an impending incursion, with them presumably racing against time to try and stop it. This could include taking further inspiration from Jonathan Hickman's"Time Runs Out" storyline that led into 2015's"Secret Wars" and giving some characters devices that can track incursions. The comics allowed various characters to have an understanding of roughly when an incursion was coming, with holographic projections of the time that it would occur illuminating from these devices. The Russo brothers may have borrowed this concept for Doomsday. Rather than just having a specific time to keep track of, the Avengers could use a countdown clock to the incursion to know how much time they have left. This would not only be a neat way of tying in the comics and making more sense of the clock's use in the trailers, but it could also add to the tension. Doomsday's characters and audiences could have a constant visual reminder of how fast an incursion is approaching. After watching the trailer's clock tick down to the movie's release, the film itself can then continue that trend and countdown to the final incursion between Earth-616 and another universe, one that could represent the end of the MCU multiverse as we know it and reshape the landscape for Avengers: Secret Wars. This is just a theory at the moment, so perhaps the Avengers: Doomsday countdown clock will have no actual bearing on the movie's plot. But it would make a lot of sense if this was the case and add another revealing detail to these trailers.
