A new Avengers: Doomsday update revealed.
Avengers: Doomsday reinvents a core Marvel Cinematic Universe dynamic. The cast of Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature characters from all corners of the MCU's release slate, including both Infinity and Multiverse Saga players, as well as multiverse characters, such as Fox's original X-Men and what are likely to be many surprises.
High on that list is the return of the two actors who became the faces of the Marvel Studios franchise, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. While the latter trades in Iron Man for Doctor Doom, the former returns as Steve Rogers/Captain America, and the dynamic between their characters will come back in a new way. In an interview shared by the Russo Brothers' AGBO Films for the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday explored the dynamic between Captain America and Iron Man and how a version of that carries over to this day in the MCU as the next Avengers movie approaches.
Anthony Russo noted how fans remain divided to this day on who was more relatable in Civil War. As for that unresolved dynamic returning in a new form in Avengers: Doomsday, he said,"both the aspirations of those characters, and flaws of those characters, continue to unfold as we move into Doomsday.
" Joe Russo then praised Marvel for how these elements can co-exist while keeping things fresh, claiming that Marvel is the best there is at"serialized storytelling at scale. " Additionally, according to him, Avengers: Doomsday is a"complete reinvention" of that dynamic as Downey takes on Doom and the franchise.
Based on how Evans' Steve Rogers was the star of the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser, as well as the character's long history in the MCU's best movies, it stands to reason that Captain America will play a large role in the upcoming 2026 movie. The Russo Brothers have indicated that to be the case when they shared said teaser and claimed that it was all going to come back to Steve Rogers, the character who had defined their time in the MCU, when they chose to return to direct the next two Avengers movies.
As for Downey's Doctor Doom, while he has yet to show up in any publicly released Avengers: Doomsday footage, his key role in the film is clear. Not only is the character part of the movie's title, but it is expected that Doctor Doom will play a major role in the fall/reshaping of the MCU multiverse.
The character made his debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, briefly seen interacting with Reed Richards and Sue Storm's son, Franklin Richards, at the Baxter Building before Vanessa Kirby's MCU hero arrived to see the Marvel villain. Captain America and Iron Man had a complicated relationship, which was often marked by the duo fighting over different plans, personalities, and ideals.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Steve Rogers' decision to stay in the past with Peggy Carter could have disastrous consequences for the multiverse, perhaps being what makes Doctor Doom clash with him. Alternatively, the actors' MCU dynamic could be reinvented as Steve tries to save the multiverse and Doom wants to control it. Whenever the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer is released, that could be made clear.
