Chris Evans' Steve Rogers looking at his son in Avengers: Doomsday
Avengers: Doomsday directors address Chris Evans' Marvel Cinematic Universe return. Evans made history in the franchise as one of its longest-running players. The actor led three successful Captain America movies, four Avengers films, and made appearances in other MCU heroes' franchises.
That all led to Evans seemingly retiring from the Steve Rogers role in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. In the latest of the MCU's Avengers movies, Captain America went to the past to live with Peggy Carter. However, that was not the end of the line for the hero, as Evans surprisingly returned as Steve Rogers in the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer. That was the first of four teasers that are being shown in theaters with Avatar: Fire and Ash. On Instagram, the Russo Brothers shared the Steve Rogers-focused Avengers: Doomsday trailer and commented on Chris Evans coming back. The Russos said,"The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…" The Avengers: Doomsday directors are the first MCU players to break their silence on the fact that Evans is back as Steve Rogers, with the hero joining Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday's cast. The Russo Brothers and Chris Evans have been collaborating for a long time. The directors first joined the MCU to helm 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They would return for 2016's Captain America: Civil War before moving from the actor's solo franchise to working with Evans in the two biggest MCU movies to date: 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The Russos were announced to return to the MCU to direct the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Before then, Deadline reported on January 14, 2021, that Chris Evans was returning to the MCU for at least one project, with potential for another. At the time, Evans took to Twitter to debunk the report, saying,"News to me." Years later, the actor made his franchise return in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, though it was not to play Captain America, but a version of Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four. Evans had famously played the Human Torch in two Fantastic Four movies in the 2000s before he joined the MCU. That return sparked new Captain America rumors. However, the actor remained adamant that he was done with the role. On June 9, 2025, speaking with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for his movie, Materialists, Chris Evans denied being in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor even went on to say,"I'm sure it's going to be that much harder when it comes out, and you feel like you weren't invited to the party."
