Avengers: Doomsday is doing plenty of things that set it apart from previous installments, like its huge cast spanning various generations of Marvel films and the sudden change in the film's plot and title.

But now there's another thing that can be added to the list: using primarily physical sets. Doomsday's production designer, Gavin Bocquet, revealed that this upcoming Marvel project will use plenty of physical sets, noting that the use of blue screen has become the default at Marvel Studios. In an interview with The Young Indy Chroniclers podcast, Bocquet talked about the post-credit scene in Thunderbolts* that was filmed before Avengers: Doomsday entered production. He noted that the scene was built with a physical backdrop and that this change of scenery was a shock for the cast members, as it was something they weren't used to, since previous projects mostly relied on blue screen and VFX. He also noted that the scene had little post-production and that most of the shots on camera were the same as those shown in the feature. "The actors were coming in, almost saying: 'Well, this is the first time we've been on a Marvel set where everything is in camera'. They were so used to having, 'Oh, we'll put the blue on the screen, we can put the ship in later. ' So, wherever you looked, it was like, 'Ah, that's interesting'." Following Thunderbolts*, when Avengers: Doomsday entered production, it was decided to use as many physical sets as possible, a decision the Russo Brothers supported. He revealed that most of the film was shot on interior sets and that the film had the budget to pull it off."In the end, that's as much a visual thing as a money thing," he explained. Continuing, he told the podcast: "Whatever we do, we were bringing that bit of experience in just to adjust those things and not presume you can always put it in visual effects. Filmmaking is an art of illusion, and if we can do it physically. I think Joe and Anthony really liked that. You know, we can only do it in certain instances, by nature of these films and the characters in them and the environments you're doing. But wherever possible, why not try those things?" When Will The First 'Avengers: Doomsday' Trailer Come Out? Avengers: Doomsday announced that it entered production in the UK back in March 2025. At the same time, it made its major casting reveal, featuring names across The Infinity Saga, Phases 4-6, and Pre-MCU projects. Since then, there have been numerous behind-the-scenes updates, including photos and rumored casting for some characters. As Avengers: Doomsday now has a year left before its scheduled release, Collider revealed that the first trailer for the highly anticipated Marvel film could come out alongside the theatrical release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, possibly giving the world a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr's return to the franchise as Doctor Doom. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
