The beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is returning with two highly-anticipated new projects in years. The sequel movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and the 2D animated fighting video game Avatar Legends are set to release within two days of each other. The movie and game look very exciting on their own merits, boasting huge stars as voice actors, smooth animation, and intriguing storylines. The release of both projects is a significant milestone for the franchise, which has had a hard time in recent years with live-action efforts and behind-the-scenes drama.
The beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is officially returning in just two weeks with two of its most highly-anticipated new projects in years.
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender is often regarded as one of the greatest animated shows ever made. Though the original series ended in 2008, The Last Airbender is still wildly beloved, and the franchise hasn't slowed down much. Shortly after the original series, the sequel series The Legend of Korra gave fans the next Avatar after Aang.
The franchise also spawned two separate live-action adaptations; the infamously bad M. Night Shyamalan film in 2010 and the divisive but overall much more acclaimed Netflix series in 2024, which returned for a second season just last month. Now, there are even other upcoming The Last Airbender shows and movies. Two of the upcoming Last Airbender projects on the horizon are also the two most highly anticipated releases currently in the franchise.
One is the sequel movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which is set to depict Aang and friends as adults at the height of their power and influence, and the other is Avatar Legends, a 2D animated fighting video game. Now, thanks to a big change from Paramount, the movie and game are releasing within two days of each other.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender & Avatar Legends Release Two Days Apart The sequel movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender has had a somewhat rocky production. It was originally intended to be released theatrically on October 9, but Paramount changed the release to a Paramount+ streaming original and moved the date up to July 25 while releasing a trailer for the film.
That means Avatar Aang's release date is just two days after the release of Avatar Legends on July 23. The weekend of July 25 will be the first time the Last Airbender franchise has released a major animated project or video game since The Legend of Korra ended in 2014. Aside from Netflix's live-action adaptation and a mobile game titled Avatar Generations, the franchise has been mostly looking ahead for other animated projects like Avatar: Seven Havens.
For the first time in over a decade, fans of the animated Last Airbender won't have to wait long for quality content. Both the movie and the game also look very exciting on their own merits, too. Avatar Aang boasts some huge stars as voice actors, the animation looks smooth and visually pleasing, and the story of Tagah, an ancient airbender found in the ice, seems intriguing.
The trailer for Avatar Aang has lived up to a lot of the hype fans had. Avatar Legends, as well, looks like a really solid fighting game with great mechanics, abilities that fit with the personalities of its characters, and some gorgeous and unique 2D animation. Simply put, they're the most exciting projects The Last Airbender has put out in years.
Avatar: The Last Airbender's Upcoming Projects Are The Best Thing Since The Legend of Korra It's hard to overstate just how exciting the release of both Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and Avatar Legends is. This franchise has had an incredibly hard time in recent years. The franchise's live-action efforts haven't been able to recapture the magic of the original, for example.
M. Night Shyamalan's live-action The Last Airbender went down as one of the worst adaptations of all time, Netflix's live-action The Last Airbender series has its own slew of problems and received middling reviews from critics and viewers alike. There's also been plenty of behind-the-scenes drama for The Last Airbender. Most notably, Avatar Aang was leaked online after a hack, letting untold thousands of people see it months before its release.
The movie also switched from a theatrical release to a streaming one, had to recast all of its voice actors, and had to survive Paramount's acquisition by Skydance. On the video game front, an untitled role-playing game was canceled years after it was initially announced. After years of problems and disappointments from The Last Airbender and its spinoffs, this franchise is finally ready to give fans what they want.
Viewers have been waiting to see Aang and Team Avatar as adults since even before The Legend of Korra, and they've been itching for a good video game for just as long. Hopefully, this movie and this game can restore the magic Avatar: The Last Airbender had back when The Legend of Korra was being released
