Avatar Aang’s streaming debut is on July 25.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is getting an early release. The beloved franchise is returning to its animation roots with the release of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which sees the titular character attempting to save his culture from going extinct.
Eric Nam is the voice of Aang, with Dave Bautista, Jessica Matten Katara, Román Zaragoza, Steven Yeun, and Dionne Quan also starring in the film. Per Variety, from July 24 to 30, Avatar Aang will have three showtimes a day at Los Angeles' AMC Burbank 8 and Manhattan's AMC Empire 25 theaters. Tickets go on sale beginning at 9 a.m. EDT on Thursday, July 16. Avatar Aang will also be screened on July 24 at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
The report indicates that by giving it a limited theatrical release, Paramount has the opportunity now to submit the film for consideration at the Oscars, including in the Best Animated Feature category. This major update comes after the movie was pulled from a theatrical release and ahead of the Paramount+ streaming debut on July 25. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender's release was originally scheduled for October 2025 before being delayed to January 2026 and then October 2026.
Paramount eventually decided to make the movie a streaming exclusive instead, a controversial move that created a backlash in the fandom against the studio. Creating even more headaches for Paramount was the film leaking online back in April. Paramount executives investigated the matter and determined that it wasn't caused by a vulnerable system, but a man in Singapore was eventually arrested in connection to the incident.
The franchise began in 2005 with the premiere of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and won an Emmy and a Peabody during its run. A sequel called The Legend of Korra debuted four years later and received positive reviews from critics as well. Avatar has been adapted twice in live-action, first with the widely panned M. Night Shyamalan movie in 2010 and a remake on Netflix.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 has already been filmed and will likely be released in 2027 to conclude the story. After these live-action endeavors, Avatar is heading back to the world of animation with Avatar Aang. Lauren Montgomery directed the film. Producers include Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Latifa Ouaou, and Maryann Garger, with Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost as screenwriters.
This movie will be the first of several Avatar-related projects coming down the pipeline after the creation of Avatar Studios, which intends to develop both shows and films. After Avatar Aang, fans can expect a brand-new two-season TV show called Avatar: Seven Havens from DiMartino and Konietzko. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will be released in select theaters on Friday, July 24, before arriving on Paramount+ on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
