Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri in Avatar: Fire and Ash

After a two-month run in theaters worldwide, director James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash has fallen out of the domestic box-office top five. The mega-budget threequel has had a so-so run; on the one hand, it's one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, but on the other, it failed to match the success of its landmark predecessors.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is poised to complete its theatrical run $1.5 billion shy of the original Avatar, and around $800 million short of Avatar: The Way of Water. Cameron, however, remains the undisputed king of the box office, having now directed four films in a row to pass the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide. Three of those films — Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic — are among the four biggest hits in history. Avatar: Fire and Ash, on the other hand, will have to settle for different achievements, such as doubling the lifetime gross of a recent sci-fi tentpole and tripling that of another. Produced on a reported budget of $400 million, which makes it one of the most expensive movies of all time, Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted to mixed reviews in December. It holds a 63% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"Remaining on the cutting edge of visual effects, Fire and Ash repeats the narrative beats of its predecessors to frustrating effect, but its grand spectacle continues to stoke one-of-a-kind thrills." Not only did the movie fall short of its predecessors at the box office, but it also earned a weaker score than them on Rotten Tomatoes and failed to secure a Best Picture nod at the Oscars. Avatar: Fire and Ash's underwhelming performance has cast a shadow of doubt over the future of the franchise. Cameron wanted to make at least two more sequels, but began downplaying them in the weeks leading up to Avatar: Fire and Ash's release, citing budgetary constraints and commitment issues. The Fate of the Avatar Franchise Is Uncertain However, the movie has grossed twice as much globally as Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, which is set to receive a sequel later this year. With nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, the movie has tripled the global haul of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the seventh installment of the live-action Transformers franchise. Produced on a reported budget of $200 million, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts underperformed with around $440 million worldwide in 2023, putting the future of the long-running franchise in jeopardy. There has been no word yet on where the franchise is headed. The Avatar series, unfortunately, seems destined for a similar fate. You can watch Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters.
