Rey (Daisy Ridley) pulls looks at the Sith Dagger of Ochi of Bestoon in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Having celebrated the incredible achievement of passing the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office, James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is setting its sights on new goals this weekend. The movie has been playing in theaters worldwide for less than a month, and has already become one of the highest-grossing hits of all time.
It'll now begin a quest to meet the high benchmark set by both its predecessors — Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water — although it's currently projected to end its global box office run with a lower haul than either of them. Over the course of its run so far, Avatar 3 has overtaken major hits such as A Minecraft Movie and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It has now passed every movie directed by Christopher Nolan, as well as the least-liked installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. With $1.083 billion at the global box office, Avatar 3 is among the 30 highest-grossing films of all time. Over a single weekend, the film passed the lifetime global box office hauls of The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Oppenheimer. It also overtook the $1.07 billion haul of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Released in 2019, the movie served as the conclusion of a trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and continued with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While both those movies earned excellent reviews, The Last Jedi divided die-hard fans with its subversive take on franchise lore. In an apparent effort to please longtime fans, certain changes were made to the larger narrative arcs, which affected the story of The Rise of Skywalker. Directed by J.J. Abrams, who also directed The Force Awakens, The Rise of Skywalker is the most expensive movie ever made, with a reported budget of $490 million. 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' Is James Cameron's Fourth Film in a Row to Pass the $1 Billion Mark It's also the lowest-grossing and worst-rated installment of the sequel trilogy. The movie is currently sitting at a 51% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion." Avatar 3 also happens to be the lowest-rated installment of Cameron's ambitious trilogy. Produced on a reported budget of more than $400 million itself, the movie seems to have settled at a 67% score on RT. It's Cameron's fourth film in a row to pass the $1 billion mark worldwide; his previous three have all hit the $2 billion milestone.
