Avatar Fire and Ash

James Cameron’s new addition to the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has been facing tough competition at the box office. Much to everyone’s surprise, four movies are battling it out at the box office and setting a new record in the process.

According to Variety, Fire and Ash grossed $88 million in its domestic box office debut, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to compare to the 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, which opened with $134 million. David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, spoke about Avatar’s disappointing box office opening: "Openings are not what the ‘Avatar’ movies are about. It’s what they do after they open that made them the No. 2 and three biggest films of all time. It will be several weeks before we really know how well the film is doing." Despite everyone talking about Avatar: Fire and Ash, it wasn’t the only new release that led to some healthy competition for Cameron’s billion-dollar franchise. Angel Studios’ animated musical David debuted alongside Lionsgate’s adaptation of The Housemaid, and the animated Seasponge returned to theaters in The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. The biblical musical David is a child-friendly adaptation of the story of David and Goliath, which grossed $22 million at the box office and placed second on the domestic charts. The animation, with music composed by Joseph Trapanese, currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 70%. The psychological thriller The Housemaid also had a healthy opening weekend, debuting in third place with $19 million at the box office. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, and Brandon Sklenar, director Paul Feig’s adaptation of Freida McFadden’s novel debuted with an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants was at number four with $16 million at the box office; ticket sales for this movie are the lowest of the other SpongeBob theatrical releases. Search for SquarePants is doing favorably in terms of critical analysis, and its Rotten Tomatoes rating is at an impressive 90%. These four movies have also marked a major milestone, and it is the first time the top four movies on the box office charts are all new releases in the 2020s. Despite Avatar: Fire and Ash not performing as one would expect, the three other films fighting for a spot in the charts have managed to exceed expectations for moviegoers and filmmakers alike. 9.5/10 Avatar: Fire and Ash 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed PG-13 Science Fiction Adventure Fantasy Release Date December 19, 2025 Runtime 197 Minutes Director James Cameron Writers Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, James Cameron, Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno Producers Jon Landau, James Cameron, Brigitte Yorke, Jamie Landau, Maria Battle-Campbell 7 Images Close Cast See All Prequel Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water Franchise Avatar Genres Science Fiction, Adventure, Fantasy Powered by Expand Collapse
