Avabai Wadia played a major role in India becoming the first country to officially promote family planning.
Despite the threat of social ostracism, Wadia plunged into the cause.
Under Wadia, FPAI adopted a decentralised, community-based approach, working with the urban poor and villagers from some of the most impoverished regions of India.This meant that, quite often, the FPAI did "anything but family planning" - it undertook projects ranging from reforestation to road-building.
For instance, a project which began in the 1970s in Malur in Karnataka, resulted in reduced infant mortality, a significant increase in the average age of marriage, and the doubling of literacy rates. The project evoked such popular support that villagers took over its management after FPAI exited the scene.
