The increase, an $8 increase beginning in October 2024, will fund the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and district attorney offices.
COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. - Coffee County residents are set to begin paying more for their car tags beginning this year.
“The DA’s office does receive state funding, but our level is approximately forty percent of our overall budget. The rest of it has to be generated locally through court costs and traffic tickets,” 12th Judicial Circuit District Attorney James Tarbox explained. “There has been a gap in revenue because populations continue to grow and not everyone pays their court cost on time.”
Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd blames dwindling revenues on a recent law that removed mandatory pistol permits. While some were not happy with the announced increase, Tarbox says this bill is needed to keep Coffee County running smoothly.
