MLB gives ABS a try on trial basis during spring training
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Major League Baseball is introducing robots to spring training this year on a trial basis in the form of the ABS . ABS will peer over the home plate umpire’s shoulder to provide the right call if a team challenges the ump’s ball or strike call. Teams get two challenges per game. A successful challenge means the team keeps its challenge. An unsuccessful challenge means the team loses one of its two challenges. A call may be challenged by the hitter, the catcher or the pitcher.
ABS takes the human elements of error and emotion out of the equation, so the strike zone never changes, which can be a good or bad thing. So beware, robot umps are coming to an MLB team near you — not this season, but soon.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
