Automakers are adding futuristic features to cars faster than safety regulators can keep up. Despite the implementation of Automatic Emergency Braking systems (AEBs), many vehicles are still unable to avoid certain crashes, as demonstrated by a recent incident in Texas.

Automakers are rushing to add futuristic features to cars at a pace so fast, safety regulators can’t keep up. Automatic Emergency Braking systems or AEBs, touted as a stop-gap measure to prevent a crash. This spring, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took a first step at requiring AEBs in all cars. But they won’t be required to work in all situations, including those when they’re needed most. obtained dramatic video of a 2021 crash in Montgomery County, Texas.

A driver, who later admitted to drinking, put his car into Autopilot mode. The car drove full-speed into an emergency scene, slammed into police cruisers and injured five officers. The automatic emergency braking system, or AEB, which is supposed to help prevent crashes, didn't prevent that one.
