A protest blocking the busiest trade route between Michigan and Canada is disrupting production for Detroit’s big three automakers.
As the days continue, the protests are now hurting automakers whose production is already struggling with a fragile supply chain and a global semiconductor shortage.Ford Motor Company reported plants in Oakville and Windsor, Ontario are running at reduced capacity Thursday. Stallantis, the parent company for Chrysler, said Wednesday shifts were cut short at “a number of U.S. and Canadian plants” because of a parts shortage caused by the bridge closure.
Canadian Vehicles Manufacturers’ Association President and CEO Brian Kingston said the protests are “hurting thousands of workers in the auto sector on both sides of the border” and “the time has come” for governments to restore cross-border trade. The Windsor Police Service said it’s taking a “diplomatic approach” to resolving the situation and requested additional law enforcement support Wednesday.
