The Tacoma Fire Department has issued a temporary shelter-in-place order for northeast Tacoma and the Browns Point and Dash Point neighborhoods.
ByTACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Fire Department has issued a temporary shelter-in-place order for some areas after a fishing vessel caught fire early Saturday morning, according to aThe order applies to the Northeast Tacoma, Browns Point and Dash Point neighborhoods. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors and limit exposure to smoke.on the boat moored at Trident Seafoods in the Hylebos Waterway just before 1 p.m. Saturday, but crews began responding to the fire in the early morning.
“We want to thank everyone for their prompt response and support,” said Joe Bundrant, CEO of Trident Seafoods. “This has been a challenging containment issue, and we appreciate the ongoing efforts over this Easter weekend.” “The freon tanks are designed with built-in heat-activated pressure relief valves which are designed to release the freon tanks’ pressure in an emergency situation,” said the USCG in a news release. “While freon can be toxic if inhaled in large quantities or in a confined space, the release of freon into the atmosphere is not expected to pose any health and safety risks to the public.”
The Coast Guard has closed the Hylebos Waterway to all commercial and recreation vessel traffic at this time and has deployed the Coast Guard Cutter Osprey and Station Seattle to enforce the closure.
