Authorities collect 104 firearms at guns-for-gift-cards event in San Marcos [Breaking]

Authorities collected 104 unwanted firearms Saturday at a guns-for-gift-cards event at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station, the department said.

The department handed out $100 gift cards for handguns, rifles and shotguns, and $200 cards for assault-style weapons and ghost guns, which are essentially untraceable guns often made from kits. The event allowed people to anonymously hand over the weapons — no questions asked, the department said in a news release. All of the collected firearms will be processed. If authorities find a gun linked to a crime, they will reach out to the agency investigating that crime. If a gun turns out to be stolen, the department will reach out to the original owner.

The department partnered with police departments across North County, including in Carlsbad, Escondido and Oceanside, and at Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos. Other partners included the District Attorney’s Office, the city of San Marcos and Project ChildSafe.
