) - Autauga County ’s Special Olympics golf team is preparing for the Area Games this weekend, and for two golfers, the road ahead leads to an even bigger stage. Special Olympics golf coach Dean Ferris started the Autauga County team five years ago and says his athletes show up each week ready to improve.
“I have very dedicated golfers that are out here every Tuesday afternoon to try to do better,” Ferris said. Now, two of those golfers, Samantha Brasher and Justin Egbe, have earned invitations to compete in the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota this June.Brasher says she’s been eagerly awaiting the opportunity.More than 3,000 athletes from all 50 states will compete across the Twin Cities during the USA Games. Ferris says Brasher has been with the program since the beginning and has built an impressive record. “Samantha has been here since year one, and has continued her consistency and done very well, won gold medals at the state tournament and all and just really done well,” Ferris said. Ferris says Egbe, who has been with the team for the past couple of years, has also earned multiple gold medals at the state level. “Justin has been with us for the last couple of years and he did well in the state tournament as well. And won a couple of gold medals,” Ferris said. For the coach and the athletes, the recognition is a major milestone — especially considering how new the program is. “Less than four years to be able to get invites to go to the USA tournament, that’s unbelievable,” Ferris said. Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
