School officials in Autauga County are pushing for a new property tax that would benefit the school system.
A new property tax has been proposed in Autauga County that the school superintendent says is crucial for the survival of the district. AUTAUGA COUNTY, Ala. - The Autauga County School District includes 14 schools and about 9,000 students, and according to Superintendent Lyman Woodfin , the district is running out of money and could be in danger of closing schools and losing teachers if something isn’t done soon.
“We’re okay right now, we’re okay next year. The true question’s gonna be when 2025-26 hits,” Woodfin expressed. That’s why the school board voted on Tuesday night to move forward with a proposed property tax to address future needs and how to pay for them. It’s the board’s first step in a month’s long process before residents can vote on the matter.
”It’ll go hopefully to the State Legislature, our legislature will decide whether or not to pursue it,” Woodfin explained. “If it makes it through that then it will be a constitutional amendment that we would hope to see at the next general election, so it could be November.”If you would like to speak on the proposal, the district is hosting two community meetings in the coming days. One will be at 6 pm.
