The material successfully helped recover 70 percent of zinc from metal waste and can also be reused multiple times.
Scientists at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences , Austria, have turned to spent brewer’s yeast to recycle metallic waste and separate them from each other.
The process to do so, however, involves chemical precipitation that produces contaminated slag, which is difficult to dispose of. Also, biochar, a material like charcoal used as a biosorbent, is difficult to separate from the wastewater. In their experiments, the scientists chose to work with economically important metals such as zinc, aluminum, copper, and nickel.
“Using waste biomass for metal recovery is not a completely new process. Still, the selectivity of biosorption processes is a key factor for efficient metal recovery from polymetallic waste streams,” added Anna Sieber, a doctoral student at K1-MET, an Austrian metallurgical research center also involved in the research.
