Austria 's conservative People's Party has signaled a willingness to form a new government with the far-right Freedom Party, following the breakdown of coalition talks with the Social Democrats and liberals. OeVP Secretary General Christian Stocker stated that he had been authorized by his party to enter into coalition negotiations with the far-right if invited.
This comes after Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation as both chancellor and party chairman to facilitate a smooth transition. The collapse of the centrist government talks, led by Nehammer, has plunged Austria into political uncertainty. President Alexander Van der Bellen will meet with Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl to discuss the situation. Stocker welcomed the president's decision to engage with Kickl, whose party secured nearly 29 percent of the vote in the September elections but had been unable to form a government until now
