Australia's warmest August in more than a century has led to a boost in retail spending, with consumers splashing out on outdoor goods including camping equipment.
New Australian retail data has revealed the increased spend on outdoor goods including gardening and camping items in August amid record breaking warm weather in the last month of winter. Australia's warmest August in more than a century has led to a boost in retail spending , with consumers splashing out on outdoor goods including camping equipment.
Turnover at department stores lifted 1.6 per cent, clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing spending was up 1.5 per cent and other retailing rose 1.3 per cent. "This year was the warmest August on record since 1910, which saw more spending on items typically purchased in spring. On the hospitality front, spending at cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services was up one per cent, and food retailing lifted 0.6 per cent.
âRetail spending was boosted this month by warmer-than-usual weather for this time of year," Robert Ewing, ABS head of business statistics"While the eastern mainland states led the rises, most states and territories benefitted from the earlier-than-usual spring temperatures. Although, some unseasonal rainfall over parts of Western Australia dampened sales slightly," Mr Ewing said.
