has ruled out a vote on Australia becoming a republic while he is in his first term of office.
Mr Albanese’s first term in office began in May, with the next election not expected until 2025 at the earliest – when the topic of whether to scrap the monarchy in favour of an Australian head of state could come back to the fore. Polling during the Queen’s reign consistently suggested that Australia’s population narrowly supports becoming a republic. It is yet to be seen what impact the transition to King Charles III will have on the issue.
