Football Australia launches the Australian Championship, a national second-tier competition set to begin in October 2025. The 16-team tournament will feature a mix of established clubs and NPL champions, aiming to provide a pathway for players and fans alike.

Football Australia has unveiled the new Australian Championship, a national second-tier competition set to kick off in October 2025. The 16-team tournament, first confirmed in October of the previous year, will feature eight foundation clubs: APIA Leichhardt FC (NSW), Avondale FC (VIC), Marconi Stallions FC (NSW), Preston Lions FC (VIC), South Melbourne FC (VIC), Sydney Olympic FC (NSW), Sydney United 58 FC (NSW), and Wollongong Wolves FC (NSW).

The remaining eight spots will be filled by premiers from the various National Premier Leagues (NPL) competitions across the country. The 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four, playing a home-and-away format against their group opponents. The top two teams from each group will progress to the finals series, culminating in a championship final scheduled for early December. Football Australia chief executive James Johnson emphasized the competition's significance, stating, 'The Australian Championship is much more than a competition — it's a national celebration of football; uniting proud historic clubs, emerging talent, and inter-generational community connection.' Johnson further elaborated on the competition's role in the broader football ecosystem, saying, 'This competition will complement the A-League, NPL, and Hahn Australia Cup, providing a connected, meaningful pathway for players and fans alike. Today's brand launch is a statement of our commitment to grow domestic football in Australia and unlock its full potential.
