Australia takes a new-look batting line-up to the MCG for the first of three one-day internationals against Pakistan.
Australia captain Pat Cummins has won the toss and elected to bowl first on what shapes as a sluggish deck. The Australians will look to extract what life they can from the pitch early.
“My body feels like it’s not 50 years old … really happy with how the build-up has gone, no hiccups,” Cummins said on Sunday. Australia has dominated rivals with a world-best strike rate in the first 10 overs of men’s ODIs since the start of last year’s World Cup. Three ODIs followed by three T20s is a low-key way to begin what is a highly anticipated season as India prepare to play five Tests in Australia for the first time since 1991-92.
In November 2022, Australia faced England in front of 10,406 – the lowest-ever crowd for an ODI at the MCG involving the hosts. While not on the same crowd-drawing level as India, Pakistan still garner plenty of support around the world, particularly in Melbourne.
