The report highlights the need for 'mutual assurance' that the Antarctic Treaty's provisions are upheld and suggests modernizing inspection methods to account for potential dual-use technologies.

"The inspection of Antarctic bases undertaken as part of is integral to the success of the as a mechanism to enforce environmental and security compliance," the committee's report states. also allowed parties to check if scientific equipment was being secretly deployed for military purposes. "If the government accepts that there be an increase in the frequency of Australian inspections, then my view is that that should be done through a specific allocation of funds."The committee also recommended the government lease or acquire a second vessel to allow Australia's only icebreaker to focus on research voyages, rather than resupply missions.
"This report serves as a reminder of the responsibility we bear to protect Antarctica's unique environment while continuing to advance our understanding of the profound global challenges it represents, and support scientists to learn as much as we can from this unique continent," Ms Payne said.
