Some of Australia’s leading mental health organisations have said that while social media can pose significant risks to young people, the “unintended consequences” of a ban need to be considered. The premiers of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia are united in a push to lift age minimums on tech platforms as governments across Australia explore the potential to ban social media for some young people.

In a submission to the joint select committee on social media and Australian society, ReachOut, Beyond Blue and Black Dog Institute are calling for evidence-based measures to improve social media safety for young people – such as the verification of mental health information and a limit to infinite scroll features. ReachOut director of service Jackie Hallan said: Young people are digital natives and for many that means that social media is already part of their worlds.
