The Australian government drops a case against actor Amber Heard, after her former partner Johnny Depp claimed she lied over the illegal importation of her two dogs, Pistol and Boo, in 2015.

The Australian government has dropped its case against actor Amber Heard over allegations she lied about the illegal importation of her two dogs, Pistol and Boo, in 2015.

It caused an international storm after then-agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce threatened the dogs would be destroyed unless Ms Heard and her ex-partner Johnny Depp returned them to California. Ms Heard's former assistant also backed that allegation in court, saying Ms Heard had ignored advice that taking the dogs to Australia would be problematic.

The Agriculture Department said it had investigated the claims with assistance from Australian and overseas agencies, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, and prepared a brief for prosecutors.
