The Elisabet Ney Museum, where the German artist sculpted prominent Texans, will close until 2026 for renovation and upgrades.
The place where German sculptor Elisabet Ney made art, hosted intellectual gatherings and ultimately died at the turn of the 20th century is being closed for renovations starting Monday. The Elisabet Ney Musuem in Austin will get exterior restoration, accessible pathways, an upgraded HVAC system and other improvements. The exhibit and lighting system will be replaced, and the roof, masonry and plumbing will be repaired.
German sculptor failed as a farmer but found her place in Texas capitol Ney sculpted Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston in the Formosa studio at the property, which she bought in 1892. The statues were commissioned for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The Austin sculpture is now in the state Capitol, and Houston can be seen in Washington, D.C.
