Austin Opens Emergency Shelters as Temperatures Drop

Austin, Texas will open emergency shelters from February 18th to 20th due to forecasted low temperatures. The shelters will operate nightly from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at One Texas Center. Individuals seeking shelter can register at this location, and after-hours transportation will be available. Families with children and unaccompanied minors will be offered hotel vouchers if shelter capacity is reached. Pets are allowed in shelters under certain conditions.

Tuesday, February 18 through Thursday, February 20 as temperatures are forecasted to dip into the low 30s and 20s overnight Wednesday. The shelters will be open each night. Registration for shelter will take place between 6 p.

m. and 8 p.m. at One Texas Center at 505 Barton Springs Road, which will serve as the central embarkation point for individuals seeking an overnight shelter.An after-hours embarkation service will also be available for those seeking transportation to a shelter outside of the embarkation period. Bus routes to OTC are lines: 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 142, and 801. CapMetro buses will provide free transportation to a shelter location from there. Families with children and unaccompanied minors will be offered hotel vouchers if shelter capacity is reached. Pets are allowed as long as they are non-aggressive, on a leash, and able to sleep with their owners. If a pet requires a crate, guests are asked to notify staff during registration.or call the CWS Hotline at 512-972-5055.
