School Superintendent Matias Segura says the district is trying to cut $30 million from next school year's budget to keep their deficit from going even higher. Inflation has pushed the cost of providing an education skyward, and state lawmakers last regular session refused to increase the basic per student allotment to fund public education.
At an April 4 meeting with school trustees, Segura said, “We wanted to minimize impact to the campuses. We had to figure out a way to address the $30 million deficit that is tied to recurring costs, but also be able to offset costs that had been incurred due to increasing costs of fixed costs.” Segura sees a potential savings of $30 million with those changes at the central office without touching the classrooms. But teachers worry services in the central office that support teachers could be cut, shifting the workload down to classroom teachers.
Cutting $30 million without touching the classrooms is a tall order since about 2/3 of the district expenses are in the classroom. District leaders also want to maintain a strong fund balance of 20% while reducing the deficit and setting up the district for future success.
