In January, over 700 volunteers counted the number of people experiencing homelessness throughout the Austin area. ECHO released the results, which estimate the number of people experiencing homelessness in the area, this afternoon.
2,374 people experiencing homelessness were counted, including both sheltered and unsheltered individuals.Kylee Mohr became homeless in 2012 because of addiction. She was able to get sober and get off the streets by herself, but she wishes help was available for others."The number of people identified as experiencing homelessness over the years has been incrementally steadily increasing," Claire Burrus, research and evaluation manager with ECHO, said.
"The PIT Count doesn't capture the transitory nature of homelessness," Akram Al-Turk, research and evaluation director with ECHO, said. "There may be many people who are experiencing homelessness on that night that were not counted by volunteers."
