Austin Hill misread how close Sammy Smith was running the inside wall at Phoenix Raceway, as he tapped the inside wall and went spinning up the race track.
Early in the second stage of the NASCAR Xfinity GovX 200 at Phoenix Raceway, Austin Hill misjudged the entry to turn three, bringing out the first caution caused by contact during the race on Saturday evening.
A lap and a half after the race went back green on lap 61, Hill was hugging the inside line and went low to try and gain air off the left side of Sammy Smith's No. 8, since Hill was following so closely he didn't realize that Smith was entirely up against the inside wall and by moving down he would colide with the said wall. Hill was sent spinning up the track, collecting the No. 00 of Sheldon Creed and No. 26 of Dean Thompson.Hill called his mistake one of the 'dumbest moves to happen to him in racing' after exiting the infield car center.'I couldn’t see much; I was right behind the No. 8 getting into turn 3 there,' Hill told The CW Sports. 'I just misjudged the inside wall, and that may be the dumbest move I’ve ever had happen to me in racing.''I feel bad because they were innocent bystanders,' Hill continued. 'Obviously, that was 100% my fault; it was just a misjudgment on my part. I was just following the No. 8 really tight there, and I was gonna try and get a little bit of air to the left side. I didn’t realize he was that close to the wall, and as soon as I realized it, it was already too late.”Hill, Thompson, and Creed all retired from the race after the incident. This is Hill's second DNF through the first four races of the Xfinity Series season. Creed, who started on the front row and is still chasing his first Xfinity Series win, was surprised to be taken out during a relatively calm moment of on-track action but knows how easy a simple mistake can be on entry to the Phoenix corners.'I think just a simple mistake out of the No. 21 there, it’s pretty blind when there’s a few cars in front of you,' Creed told The CW. 'It sounds like he hit the wall. I haven’t seen the replay yet, but it sounds like he hit the inside wall and shot up into us. Unfortunately a wrong place and the wrong time.
