The former head coach of the Philadelphia Union brings MLS experience and a title-winning pedigree to Austin.
The 2027 Austin FC season will kick off with a new head coach , the third in the team's history. Austin FC has named Jim Curtin the team's next head coach .
A two-time MLS coach of the year, Curtin led the Philadelphia Union to seven MLS Cup playoff appearances during a decade in charge. Curtin will become Austin FC’s third head coach in club history but won't officially begin the job until the end of the MLS season, in December. While with the Union, Curtin won the 2020 Supporters Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.
He also guided the team to the MLS Cup Final in 2022.
“I had several other opportunities, both within MLS and abroad, but none of them excited me the way this project did,” Curtin said in a statement from the club. “The city of Austin is unlike anywhere else and the chance to compete for this community was simply too compelling to pass up. ”with head coach Nico Estévez and sporting director Rodolfo Borrell in May.
Borrell arrived in Austin midway through the 2023 season and oversaw a roster overhaul along with the transition from Josh Wolff, the club's first head coach, to Estévez ahead of the 2025 season. Estévez guided Austin back into the MLS Cup playoffs and to the final of the US Open Cup in 2025. The club will now seek to fill the sporting director vacancy with someone ready to work with Curtin as their head coach.
Interim head coach Davy Arnaud will remain on the sideline for the remainder of the 2026 MLS season. The club sits 14th in the Western Conference. They return to action after the World Cup, hosting Seattle Sounders FC on July 22 at Q2 Stadium.
