Some Austin City Council members are still looking for clarity as they prepare to vote on a new contract with Austin Police. Today, they will receive a briefing

For some on the city council, there's more than money at stake in this labor agreement. The new contract would provide forfor officers which should help recruiting and retention. But some council members are voicing concerns from their constituents about additional police oversight and accountability.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis believes the financial terms of the new contract will improve recruitment and retention. She said at the announcement of the tentative agreement, “Retention, morale and recruiting are all tied together so when they come from a space where they're getting a great contract and they're feeling supported by that-- not having a contract for a couple of years takes its toll.

He says, “Approval of this deal tees up the city to continue to be in litigation. And we would hope that the council would respect the court's order, and the will of the voters, and send this back to the bargaining table in order to ensure that no deal passes that doesn't comply with the law and the will of the voters."
