Austin city council approves a resolution that would put changes to the land development code into action – and the city council members who voted yes say it will make housing more affordable., the name of the changes to the land development code , have said that it will change neighborhoods and there is no guarantee it will make housing more affordable.
This is the resolution as it was written in the city council agenda said, “Approve a resolution directing the City Manager to initiate new programs, streamline processes, and build on the City's existing resources to ensure the recently adopted amendments to City Code Title 25 regarding regulations for housing units are accessible to low- and moderate-income homeowners, helping minimize the impacts of displacement.
Councilmember Jose Velasquez sponsored it. “there is no one size fits all measure when it comes to making Austin an affordable place for everyone. But by thinking through these issues holistically, and putting multiple tools support, and safeguards in place, we’ll be able to offer low- and moderate-income residents more options,” he said to the rest of the council.
The resolution allows for both public and private partnerships that would allow homeowners access to capital, as well as policies and processes, to move the home initiative into action. “the reality is there are significant costs and hurdles associated with building an additional unity, which is why we’re being proactive in trying to make this opportunity accessible to homeowners at all income levels,” said Velasquez.
You may remember the city’s previous attempt to reform the land code failed after a group of homeowners sued. Until the HOME initiative, the last time the land code changed was 1984.
