Barnes’ squeeze bunt ties it in the 8th and Mookie Betts’ two-run single drives in the go-ahead runs for a 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins
LOS ANGELES – A miserable season for Austin Barnes is starting to feel a whole lot better., Barnes laid down a bunt to drive in the tying run and set up Mookie Betts’ go-ahead two-run single as the Dodgers rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.After roaring through the first 15 games this month, swamping opponents with an average of 6.6 runs per game, the Dodgers’ offense has gone quiet.
The 6-foot-8 Perez allowed just two baserunners – a two-out double by Chris Taylor in the second inning and a one-out single by Will Smith in the fourth. Perez retired eight in a row after Smith’s single, striking out five. At the same time, the Dodgers’ “bullpen game” pitching plan worked pretty well. Caleb Ferguson, Ryan Pepiot and Ryan Yarbrough allowed only one run in the fourth inning.
That was the only blemish on a solid five-inning outing from Pepiot, making his delayed season debut. Pepiot made the Dodgers’ starting rotation out of spring training but suffered a rib injury that was eventually diagnosed as a strained intercostal muscle. It sidelined him for the first three months.
