A major fire at the Trails of Walnut Creek apartment complex in North Austin displaced up to 35 residents on Sunday. The blaze, which started in a wall behind a breaker panel, caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

A million-dollar fire in North Austin forced up to 35 people out of their apartments. It was one of three major fires that broke out on Sunday and Monday. Austin fire crews are busier in the winter than in any other season of the year. December and January become our busiest time of year for structure fires, said Austin Fire Chief Thayer Smith. Fire crews worked a brush fire near a homeless camp and an apartment fire Monday morning.

Sunday afternoon another apartment fire was upgraded to three alarms before the blaze at the Trails of Walnut Creek was under control. Fire started from the other side and then spread inside the ceiling to our apartment, said Nayzaw Lin who moved into the north Austin apartment complex less than three months ago. Sunday’s fire destroyed many of his belongings. On Monday he was able to salvage his 5-year-old daughter’s pink table and chairs, but so much else was lost to fire, water, and smoke damage. The room is smoky. I can feel the smoke. I see all the things scattered on the floor, said Lin. The fire ignited at 3 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Braker Lane and Metric Boulevard at the Trails of Walnut Creek apartment complex. Gusty winds spread the flames quickly, pushing the fire to 3 alarms. No one was injured and six cats, three dogs, and a snake were rescued from the 24-unit building. Fire investigators said the blaze originated inside a wall behind a breaker panel on Monday. It certainly was an electric failure inside the wall that allowed the fire to grow inside the wall and in between the floors and by the time it was discovered it already had a pretty good hold, said Chief Smith.Unfortunately, this is our busiest time of year.
