Texas officials urge caution in Central Texas this weekend due to potential flooding and storms, advising preparation and avoiding travel if possible.

A pickup truck maneuvers a residential street filled with water in Woodloch, Texas , subdivision near The Woodlands as floodwaters rise Friday, May 3, 2024. Torrential rain is inundating southeastern Texas , forcing schools to cancel classes and closing numerous highways around Houston.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Bob Fogarty says things shouldn’t be as severe in Austin, but other officials say you should be prepared anyway. Luckily, Fogarty says we shouldn’t see anything like what's been happening over the last few days in the Houston area-- where people have been trapped and needed rescuing due to the torrential downpours.

Fogarty says this weekend’s weather in Austin and Central Texas shouldn’t be too bad, “The storm prediction center has a scale where they talk about the chance of severe thunderstorms and for the weekend right now, the way it looks right now in the Austin area, it’s a level 1 out of 5,” he says. But that weather will also likely affect travel.
