A staple of Australian cuisine is facing an uncertain future with recent sales statistics showing the country is turning its back on the cult item in astounding numbers.
Recently released figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics – as reported by news.com.au – show pie spending has dropped an astounding 40 per cent from its peak.
Some are blaming the decline in interest on the cost-of-living crisis, which has forced the price of meat pies up. A four-pack of Four’N Twenty frozen meat pies will set back the Aussie shopper a total of $8.50 at Coles, while a Billy’s pie is a whopping $6.50 at 7-Eleven service stations.
