PETALING JAYA: A 39-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to smuggling heroin-filled pellets into Australia.
According to the Cairns Post, an Australian newspaper, the Malaysian man, Gunalan Subramaniam, told the court that he had agreed to courier the drugs after he had"borrowed money from a shadowy figure for his mother's cancer treatment".
It said County Court of Victoria Judge Michael O'Connell took into account Gunalan's difficult life in Malaysia and his early guilty plea when sentencing. "Internal drug concealment is not just gross, it has the potential to be deadly. Pellets are often wrapped tightly, and there is a very real chance they could rupture or leak while still inside your body," the Australian Federal Police said on its Facebook page Thursday .
Gunalan was believed to have swallowed the heroin-filled pellets and had to expel them by defecating.
