Auschwitz, a place synonymous with unimaginable suffering, death, and inhuman cruelty, holds a unique and unexpected significance for two sisters: Eva Umlauf and her older sister, whose name was not provided. Despite being born into the horrors of the Holocaust , they survived against all odds, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.Eva, 82, was born in a Slovakian labor camp in December 1942 and transported to Auschwitz less than two years later.
At the time, she was a frail and sickly baby, given little chance of survival by Red Cross doctors. Yet, she thrived, a miracle in the midst of despair. She recalls the train arriving late, mere days after the Nazis had destroyed crematoriums in a desperate attempt to conceal their atrocities from the advancing Allied forces. Both sisters have no recollection of their time in Auschwitz, but the indelible tattoo on the older sister's wrist – A-26959 – serves as a stark and constant reminder of their harrowing past. The sisters were eventually reunited with their 21-year-old mother, Agnes, and moved to their family home in Trenčín, Slovakia. They are now accomplished women, Sbornik as a specialist in internal medicine and Umlauf as a pediatrician and psychotherapist, both practicing in Germany. Now, Umlauf carries the heavy burden of memory, speaking out and lecturing about the dangers of antisemitism, urging the world to never forget the lessons of the Holocaust. Her message is clear: remembrance is crucial, and it serves as a warning against the rise of intolerance and hatred. She believes that education and understanding are the only way to prevent history from repeating itself
