Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman accuses Denver Mayor Mike Johnston of withholding information about the role of nonprofits in sending migrants, including alleged gang members, to Aurora.
Aurora , Colorado, has been grappling with crime linked to the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA). Now, the city’s mayor, Mike Coffman, is accusing his Denver counterpart, Mike Johnston, of being dishonest about how these gang members, and other migrants, ended up in his city.
Coffman, in an op-ed for The Denver Gazette, is demanding that Johnston come clean about his role in how two nonprofits allegedly transported and housed migrants in Aurora without informing the local mayor or other city officials. Coffman claims that many Venezuelan migrants, including criminals, have ended up in Aurora due to the nonprofits' actions. Johnstons office denies directing any nonprofit or agency to place migrants in Aurora. A viral video from August showing armed TdA gang members breaking into an Aurora apartment complex brought national attention to the gang's presence in the city. Coffman said he and Johnston held a joint press conference last year to demonstrate their efforts to target TdA gang members and alleviate the national panic surrounding the issue following the video's release. Coffman, a Republican, wrote that he approached Johnston, a Democrat, moments before the press conference and expressed his bewilderment that Aurora seemed to be bearing the brunt of the Venezuelan gang problem while Denver was seemingly unaffected, despite Johnston publicly welcoming thousands of migrants bused from Texas. Approximately 45,000 migrants have arrived in the Denver metro area since December 2022, according to data from the Common Sense Institute of Colorado, a nonpartisan research organization committed to safeguarding and promoting the U.S. economy. 'Johnston, who frequently relies on political soundbites, remained silent in response,' Coffman wrote
