Aurora is seeking to increase its tax on the gross sales of recreational marijuana in the city.
City Council members on the Finance Committee Thursday heard a plan to increase that tax by 1%, from 2% to 3%, which is the maximum of what is called the retailer’s occupation tax that cities can enact. When Aurora first enacted its tax on recreational marijuana in 2020, city officials passed only a 2% tax because the industry was new, and officials wanted to see how things went.
The city actually collects a total of 4.25% in taxes on recreational marijuana. In addition to the 2% occupation tax, the city gets 1% of the sales taxes collected by the state on marijuana, and another 1.25% from the city’s own home rule general sales tax.Minick said the increase would bring Aurora an estimated $50,000 to $150,000 in additional taxes from the two dispensaries currently operating - the nuEra on Farnsworth Avenue, and Zen Leaf on Route 59, near New York Street.
A fourth dispensary is in the works along Orchard Road. The city could even have a fifth dispensary, in the southeast quadrant of the city, officials said.
