Visitors to St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Aurora over the weekend took a trip back through culinary time with the fall version of Aurora Greek Fest, now in its 24th year.

Chris Procopos of Oswego oversees one of the many grills cooking Greek dishes at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Aurora during its three-day festival over the weekend. “It takes a lot of work and a lot of preparation. There are ladies that come in and bake while others bake the pastries at home,” Collins said. “We’ve had people already filling cups and the actual festival has a lot of workers – we have the cooks, we have the clean-up. It takes a lot of people to put this on. This builds a lot of spirit among the church members who come and enjoy working together and doing something good.
Procopos agreed that the food is very authentic and that the popularity of the event can be traced to “it being something different” and the sense of community it offers. “The food is very authentic and there’s pretty much nothing I don’t like,” Cortez said as she entered the church on Friday. “I could pretty much eat my way through the whole menu. I would if I could but I can’t, so I just figure, whatever I haven’t had in a long time. I can make a few of these items but some are too labor intensive. I’m happy for someone else to make them.”
