Some Texans could get a glimpse this weekend of the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights , in what officials are calling an “unusual and potentially historic event.” The phenomenon lit up skies across the country Friday night as Earth was hit with severe geomagnetic storms caused by solar explosions, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Geomagnetic storms disrupt the Earth ’s magnetic field, causing the aurora borealis to appear in the night sky.

Since the magnetic field is disrupted during geomagnetic storms, it could potentially affect communications, navigation, radio, satellite and the electric power grid, according to NOAA.
