The Northern Lights could be visible as far as Alabama and northern California due to severe geomagnetic storms.

Some Texans could get a glimpse this weekend of the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights , in what officials are calling an “unusual and potentially historic event.” The phenomenon lit up skies across the country Friday night as Earth was hit with severe geomagnetic storms caused by solar explosions, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Geomagnetic storms disrupt the Earth ’s magnetic field, causing the aurora borealis to appear in the night sky.

Rain chances to rise late Saturday and Mother's Day Your best bet for catching a peek at the Northern Lights is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. In urban areas, viewers should travel away from the light pollution to get a better look, NOAA said. Since the magnetic field is disrupted during geomagnetic storms, it could potentially affect communications, navigation, radio, satellite and the electric power grid, according to NOAA.
