Aurora area events to mark anniversary of 9/11 attacks

A number of events are planned in the Aurora area Monday to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

The Aurora Fire Department and Aurora Police Department will host the city’s annual Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony on Monday, city officials said.Beginning at 7:30 a.m., Aurora’s public safety officials will be joined by city leaders and community members at the Aurora Central Fire Station, 75 N. Broadway Ave., for the ceremony.

Marking the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, the ceremony in Aurora will feature a presentation of colors, remarks of remembrance about the anniversary and a wreath-laying ceremony by the Aurora Fire Department and Aurora Police Department honor guards.A special bell tolling and moment of silence will be held at 7:46 a.m., the minute the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.The St.

The ceremony will honor first responders who put duty before self to rescue victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and remember those who lost their lives that day, officials said. The ceremony will include remarks from members of the St. Charles Fire Department, state Sen. Donald DeWitte, R-St. Charles, and St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek; the posting of the Fire Department Memorial Flag; placing of a memorial wreath and a moment of silence.

Naperville’s remembrance ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.This year’s speaker is Dan Bacso, founding member of American Pride Inc. and a survivor of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Remarks will also be given by Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Police Chief Jason Arres and Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis.
