It was the story of Ray Charles, the first time I had to study music as well as an era. It was that wonderful challenge that you get as an actor when you’re taking on a new role, but this one in particular just had so many more layers to it. I still get nervous, actually, to this day, right before I start a project.

But it was tough because it was during COVID. Did you guys have a time where you had to break — stop, start back, any of that?Did you find that that helped or hindered the process of your performance, having to start and stop again?When we stopped in March 2020, I just thought that was going to be the end of it. I didn’t think we were going to come back at all, so I had let it go. I really didn’t think about it.

I’m talking to you, and it’s hitting me that you have been central in several classic American films. When I think of you — and I’m not throwing this around — you are an icon of American cinema, and you are an icon of [starts to cry] Black American cinema.I wanted to hear a little bit about your awareness of that.
