'This is a very worrying period': Opposition leader Peter Dutton says the acquisition of nuclear submarines under the AUKUS agreement is 'absolutely essential' to stopping conflict in the region.
This comes as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to announce Australia’s acquisition of nuclear submarines – made possible by AUKUS – in a joint statement with President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday Morning.
“We’re very supportive of the AUKUS deal – we did the deal,” Mr Dutton said in an exclusive interview with Sky News Australia's Paul Murray. The Opposition Leader said that “people should be very worried” about China’s increasing military assertiveness. Mr Dutton said he was glad to read news reports that Australia was set to acquire up to five US Virginia class nuclear submarines while simultaneously working on the design of a new boat with the US and UK.
