Despite extensive damage from Hurricane Helene, Augusta National Golf Club is poised for the Masters tournament in April. Chairman Fred Ridley addresses the community's recovery and the course's readiness.

Augusta National Golf Club and the surrounding community in Georgia faced significant damage from Hurricane Helene in late September. While the storm caused extensive harm, the golf course is expected to be in its usual exceptional condition for the Masters tournament in April. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley addressed the situation at a news conference in Buenos Aires on Thursday, stating that the club experienced a loss of some trees due to the hurricane's impact.

'As far as the impact, the long-term impact, we have not quite as many trees as we did a year ago,' Ridley said. However, he emphasized that the golf course itself is in spectacular condition, with minor damage to the playing surfaces quickly repaired. 'I think we had minor damage to the course, the playing surfaces themselves, but we were able to get that back in shape, but I don't think you're going to see any difference in the condition for the Masters this year,' Ridley assured. Ridley was speaking alongside USGA CEO Mike Whan and R&A chairman Niall Farquharson at Pilar Golf Club during the tenth edition of the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC). The LAAC winner will gain entry to prestigious tournaments like the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open, as well as the U.S. Amateur and the Amateur Championship in Britain. In October, following the hurricane, Ridley had called the damage to the community 'catastrophic and historic' and issued a statement outlining the situation. The club postponed its fall opening by over a month due to the storm's aftermath. Later in October, Ridley announced that Augusta National, in collaboration with the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area, would donate $5 million to the Hurricane Helene Community Crisis Fund. 'Hurricane Helene was really a devastating event for the Augusta community and for a number of communities in the southeast, particularly in western North Carolina,' Ridley stated on Thursday. 'We suffered a fair amount of impact from the hurricane and as did the entire community. 'I think what I'm the most proud of is the response of our entire organization to that natural disaster, which is really what it was,' he continued. 'And not only what they did to get Augusta National back in shape, but as importantly, how they pitched in with the Augusta community and really helped out because there were many, many people, many of our people were out of their homes for a number of weeks. No electricity. The community didn't have water for a while,' Ridley added. He highlighted the club's efforts in both restoration and community support during the challenging aftermath of the hurricane
