Quite recently, six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald denied rumors that she would play Mama Rose in a Broadway revival of the classic musical “Gypsy.”
However, those rumors have turned out to be true, with an official announcement that “Gypsy” starring McDonald will reopen the Majestic Theatre in the fall. Two decades ago, “Gypsy” received Broadway revivals starring Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone . The role of Rose was originated by Ethel Merman and has also been played on Broadway by Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly . The new production will be directed by George C. Wolfe and have choreography by Camille A. Brown .
Whereas the original 2013 Off-Broadway production received a muted reception, Second Stage’s starry Broadway revival received raves during its limited run at the Hayes Theater, prompting a commercial transfer to the Belasco Theatre, where it has continued to do strong business, even in the midst of heavy competition from other new shows. The production announced last week that it will receive a final extension through June 30 due to popular demand.
